The city of Hayward has a very colorful past.
In 1841 Don Guillermo Castro was granted land
from California Governor Juan Alvarado for his
service in the Mexican Army. This grant, called
Rancho San Lorenzo, includes much of what is
today Castro Valley, Hayward and San Lorenzo.
Guillermo Castro later lost all of this land
because of his penchant for gambling. A New
England shoe maker named William Hayward came
to California during the Gold Rush of 1849 but
found he could get more gold making shoes. He
became aquanted with Castro and later bought
land from him. Hayward soon built a resort hotel
which prospered and helped the area become a
tourist destination.
The city of Hayward was
known for its agriculture, salt production and
tourism by the late 1800s. Agriculture was why
the Hunt Brothers built a cannery in 1895 to
produced tomato products until 1981 when it
was closed and moved to Sacramento. The city
saw much growth in the housing and manuacturing
markets both during and after WWII.
Hayward offers affordable
housing in the Bay Area. The median sales price
for housing is some of the lowest in the Bay
Area. Once you purchace that home, getting around
the Bay Area is easy. Transporation is provided
by three major roads, Interstates 880 &
580 and Highway 238. The Bay Area Rapid Transit
(BART) rail serves Hayward with stations at
B Street and Dixon Street. BART serves many
cities in San Francisco Bay Area including two
International airports. Hayward also has its
own airport on Hesperian Blvd. as well as being
10 minutes away from Oakland International Airport.
Recreation is never a problem in the Bay Area
with the many parks and open spaces. Hayward
is no different with Garin and Dry Creek Pioneer
Regional Parks to the east of town and Hayward
Regional Shoreline on the west side. There is
a something for everyone at the regional parks
as well as the many city parks located within
