Pinole is a smaller bedroom
community along Interstate 80 that borders Richmond,
Hercules, San Pablo and El Sobrante. The population
here is roughly 20,000 residents and the community
is largely residential. Pinole is about 20 miles
North East of San Francisco and travel time
to the city is estimated at 30-40 minutes by

Bay Area Real Estate
The name Pinole is derived
from a kind of flour made from mustard seeds
and other herbs. The Spaniards came across a
village close by therefore naming there camp
“El Pinole”. The area grew with
the coming of the Southern Pacific Railroad
and the California Powder Works in the late
1800’s. Pinole was incorporated in the
early 1900’s. Pinole really started to
grow after World War II and after the completion
of Interstate 80 in 1958 became a bedroom community
with much of its land being developed. The City
of Pinole is largely residential but is known
for its shopping centers on Fitzgerald Avenue
including names such as Best Buy, Target, Mervyns,
Staples and many more.
Pinole like much of the
Bay Area is largely diverse with just about
every ethnicity residing there. The San Francisco
Bay Area is very much a large melting pot of
cultures. Pinole has easy access to Interstate
80 and is close to Highway 4 and Interstate
680. It is relatively easy to get around much
of Contra Costa County and the greater Bay Area.
Pinole is also close to Marine World and Highway
37 to travel to Napa and Sonoma along with much
of the Wine Country.
Pinole is composed of mainly
middle class families residing there with less
than six percent of the community over the age
of 65. Pinole was nominated as one of the best
places to live in 2005 based on household income,
demographics, crime statistics and weather.
