Rodeo is a small community
located off of Interstate 80 about thirty miles
South East of San Francisco. Its neighboring
cities are San Pablo, Hercules and Crockett.
It is just Northwest across the water and the
carquinez Bridge from Vallejo and is close to
Benicia. Rodeo is also close to highway 4 and
traveling throughout Contra Costa County is
relatively easy.
Rodeo gets its name from
the late 1800’s when it had a large part
in the livestock business. The locals used to
have to round up the livestock called a rodeo.
It also had industry with logging and shipping
goods via ship. Union Oil Company purchased
land from the lumber company and the Uncial
76 refinery is still in the same location for
over a century now. Rodeo is a small town where
everyone knows each other. There is active participation
within the community for just about everything
including activities and local government. Most
of the residents are long term but the people
are very friendly and welcome new faces.
Rodeo is a waterfront community
that is known for its stripped bass fishing.
There used to be many commuters ferries but
lack of demand has ceased operations. Windsurfing,
hiking and boating are favorite activities to
the local community. Rodeo feels like a small
town even more than other places like El Sobrante.
It is very different from the urban life that
many know living in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Maybe that’s why the residents of Rodeo
don’t move. Rodeo has a good selection
of homes with many different styles. The real
estate is more affordable there and it has many
bungalow style homes from the 1930’s in
the day when logging and livestock were the
main staples of the towns commerce. There are
also some newer homes up in the rolling hills
that posses great views of the San Pablo Bay.
