Bay Area Real Estate
According to Census 2000,
43% of Union City residents are of Asian decent,
24% Hispanic, 20% white, and 7% African-American.
A very well located place, Union City is close
to all the major Bay Area cities like Oakland,
San Jose and San Francisco. Its Sister City
is Pasay, Philippines.
Settlers John and William
Horner found an oasis by the Bay and laid out
a small settlement of eight square blocks in
1850, which they called "Union City."
The name probably originates from the Horners'
Sacramento River steam boat called "The
Union." Before these pioneers, Mexican
rancheros and the Ohlone Indians occupied the
area. The area was well known for its fruits,
vegetables and eventually sugar, salt and steel
industries. When incorporated in 1959, Union
City brought together the communities of Alvarado,
Decoto, and New Haven. Since then many young
families have moved to the area, attracted to
a friendly and safe community with new housing
developments and an abundance of jobs.
Union City transportation
is easy to commute by Interstate 880. The Bay
Area Rapid Transit (BART) system operates a
train station at 10 Union Square near Decoto
Road east of Alvarado-Niles Road. Getting to
the major airports is easy. Oakland International
airport is 15 minutes to the north, San Francisco
International is 20 miles to the west and San
Jose International is 20 miles to the south.
