is very similar to that of Orinda and Lafayette
with warmer temperatures than on the other side
of the Western side of the Caldecott Tunnel.
Walnut Creek goes back to the mid 1800’s
and was originally called
“ The Corners” For two main roads
that met near Mt. Diablo blvd and North Main
Street meet today. In 1855 there was a famous
hotel built that obtained the name “Walnut
Creek House” followed by a US post office
completion in 1865. The Hotel had a view of
the creek that ran throughout the community.
The locals decided to call the area around the
Post Office Walnut Creek. The City did not officially
incorporate until the fall of 1914 when Walnut
Creek became the 8th city to join Contra Costa
County.
Walnut Creek in the early
1970’s had the Army core of engineers
re-route the creek to create underground tunnels.
There has been speculation that they used these
tunnels to transport weapons underground to
the Naval Weapons Station in Concord. Many of
these tunnels are still in use today. Walnut
Creek is a very nice environment for many reasons
but one of them is the space. The city of Walnut
Creek has more space per capita that any other
city in California except for Palo Alto. The
population is predominantly Caucasian with a
small percentile of every other ethnicity making
up the balance. The majority of the community
is between the ages of 24 and 64 with many upper
class families raising children.
Walnut Creek is home to
Broadway Plaza and has more up-scale stores
in the mall there like Nordstrom, Macys and
many other fine retailers. There are many activities
to do there including a visit to the botanical
gardens at Heather Farm or Mt. Diablo. Walnut
Creek is an open and clean environment with
many office buildings downtown. It is convenient
